Biography

Note: There is some discrepancy about the identity of Bridget's father, but the most reliable source[1] indicates Piers de Bermingham, son of Meiler de Bermingham.[2]

From the Journal of the Galway Archaeological and Historical Society:[3]

  • Bridget is listed (p.51):
    • as the wife of "Sir Henry Dillon of Drumrany"
    • as the sister of Richard de Bermingham ("Richard of the Battles, a brave and warlike man"), who was Sheriff of Connacht (in 1299, 1310, 1316)
    • as the daughter of Piers de Bermingham, who enlarged Athenry Castle and who aided (along with his cousin, another Piers de Bermingham) King Edward I in his struggle against the Scots (1295-1305).

From Constables of Athlone Castle:[4][5]

  • Sir Henry Dillon was Lord of Drumraney in modern Westmeath and 2nd son of Henry (or William) Dillon, lord of Drumraney by Alivia, daughter of Maurice Fitzgerald. Sir Henry Dillon married Bridget ... de Birmingham and had at least 4 sons.[6]

  2. Note: Bridget's father Piers de Bermingham is often confused with his 1st cousin Piers de Bermingham -- who was the son of James, Lord of Thetmoy, the brother of Meiler.

  6. Discrepancy: The Peerage places Bridget as the daughter of Piers Bermingham and an unspecified mother.
